Pharynx, injuries to (DC 6521)

Body system: Respiratory SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.97

This rating covers injuries to your pharynx (the throat area behind your mouth and nose) that cause serious problems with swallowing, breathing, or speaking. The VA gives a 50% rating when you have a narrowed or blocked throat, are missing part of your soft palate due to injury or disease, or have paralysis that makes it hard to swallow (food comes back through your nose) and affects your speech. This is a single-rating condition, meaning if you qualify, you get the full 50% - there are no lower percentages available.

Rating levels

  • 50% — You qualify for this rating if you have a narrowing or blockage in your throat or the area behind your nose that makes it hard to breathe or swallow. You also qualify if you're missing part of the soft palate (the soft tissue at the back of your mouth's roof) due to injury, burns, or certain diseases, or if your soft palate is paralyzed and causes problems with swallowing where food comes back up through your nose and affects how clearly you can speak.
