Burn scar or scar due to other causes, not of the head, face, or neck, that are not associated with underlying soft tissue damage (DC 7802)

Body system: SkinRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.118

This diagnostic code covers burn scars or other types of scars anywhere on your body except your head, face, or neck. The VA only rates these scars if they don't involve damage to the deeper tissues underneath (like muscle or tendons). You need at least 144 square inches of scarring to qualify for even the minimum 10% rating - that's about the size of a standard piece of paper. The rating is based purely on the surface area of your scars.

Rating levels

  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if you have burn scars or other types of scars anywhere on your body except your head, face, or neck, and these scars cover a total area of 144 square inches or more. To put this in perspective, 144 square inches is roughly the size of a 12-inch by 12-inch square. The scars must be surface-level only, meaning they haven't damaged the deeper tissues like muscles underneath your skin.
