Burn scar of the head, face, or neck; scar of the head, face, or neck due to other causes; or other disfigurement of the head, face, or neck (DC 7800)

Body system: SkinRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.118

This diagnostic code covers scars and disfigurement on your head, face, or neck - whether from burns, injuries, surgeries, or other causes. The VA rates these conditions from 10% to 80% based on how many facial features are affected and how many 'characteristics of disfigurement' you have. Higher ratings go to veterans with more severe scarring that affects multiple features like your nose, eyes, ears, or causes significant tissue loss.

Rating levels

  • 80% — You qualify for this rating if burn scars or other injuries to your head, face, or neck have caused visible or feelable tissue loss (missing skin, muscle, or other tissue you can see or touch) AND have grossly distorted or made uneven three or more major facial features like your nose, chin, forehead, eyes, ears, cheeks, or lips. You also qualify if your scars or disfigurement have six or more separate characteristics that affect your appearance, regardless of tissue loss.
  • 50% — To qualify for this rating, you must have noticeable tissue loss (missing skin, muscle, or other tissue that you can see or feel) AND significant distortion or lopsidedness affecting two major facial features like your nose, chin, forehead, eyes, ears, cheeks, or lips. Alternatively, you can qualify if your scars have four or five specific disfiguring characteristics, even without the tissue loss requirement.
  • 30% — To qualify for this rating, you must have scars or disfigurement on your head, face, or neck that causes visible or feelable tissue loss (missing skin or tissue you can see or touch) along with obvious distortion or uneven appearance of at least one facial feature like your nose, chin, forehead, eyes, eyelids, ears, cheeks, or lips. Alternatively, you can qualify if your scars or disfigurement have two or three different characteristics that affect your appearance, such as changes in color, texture, thickness, or shape of the scarred area.
  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if you have visible scarring or disfigurement on your head, face, or neck that shows one noticeable characteristic of disfigurement. This could be from burns, injuries, surgeries, or other causes that left permanent marks, discoloration, texture changes, or altered appearance that others can see.
