Old World leishmaniasis (DC 7808)

Body system: SkinRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.118

Old World leishmaniasis (cutaneous, Oriental sore) is a skin infection caused by parasites transmitted through sandfly bites, typically contracted in the Middle East, Africa, or Asia. The VA doesn't have specific rating criteria for this condition under DC 7808, so they'll rate it based on what symptoms you currently have - either as facial disfigurement (0-80%), general scars (0-40%), or ongoing skin problems like dermatitis (0-60%). Your rating depends on how the healed infection affects your appearance or causes continuing skin issues.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Old World leishmaniasis (cutaneous form, also called Oriental sore) is a parasitic skin infection contracted in parts of the Mediterranean, Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. The VA does not assign a percentage for the infection itself; it rates whatever skin residuals are dominant — disfigurement of the head, face, or neck (DC 7800), scars (DC 7801–7805), or dermatitis (DC 7806) — under 38 CFR § 4.118.
