Erythema multiforme; Toxic epidermal necrolysis (DC 7827)

Body system: SkinRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.118

Erythema multiforme and toxic epidermal necrolysis are serious skin conditions that cause painful blisters and sores, often affecting the mouth, hands, feet, and other areas. The VA rates these conditions based on how often severe flare-ups occur and where they happen on your body. Ratings range from 10% for occasional episodes to 60% for frequent, severe flare-ups that happen four or more times per year despite treatment and significantly impact your ability to eat, use your hands, or walk.

Rating levels

  • 60% — You qualify for 60% if you have had four or more episodes over the past 12 months involving mucous membranes, palms, or soles severe enough to interfere with chewing, hand use, or walking, and these episodes occur despite ongoing immunosuppressive treatment.
  • 30% — You qualify for 30% if both apply: you have had four or more episodes of mucous membrane, palm, or sole involvement over the past 12 months that do not impair chewing, hand use, or walking, and you require intermittent systemic therapy.
  • 10% — You qualify for 10% if either applies: you have had one to three episodes of mucous membrane, palm, or sole involvement over the past 12 months that do not impair chewing, hand use, or walking and require intermittent systemic therapy, or you have no recurrent episodes but require continuous systemic medication to control the condition.
  • -1% — If the predominant disability is disfigurement or scarring rather than the active disease, the VA may rate it under DC 7800 (head, face, or neck disfigurement) or scar DCs (7801, 7802, 7804, or 7805) instead.
  • -1% — For DC 7827 only, "systemic therapy" includes immunosuppressive drugs, antihistamines, or sympathomimetic medications, broader than the typical eczema-style systemic-therapy list.
