Encephalitis, epidemic, chronic (DC 8000)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain, and this specific code covers the chronic (long-lasting) form of epidemic encephalitis. The VA rates this condition at 100% during active episodes when you have fever and are actively sick. Once the active phase passes, any lasting effects (residuals) are rated at a minimum of 10%, though they could be rated higher depending on how severe your ongoing symptoms are.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You qualify for this rating level when you have chronic epidemic encephalitis (long-term brain inflammation from a viral outbreak) that is still actively causing fever and making you sick. The condition must be in an active phase where you're experiencing ongoing symptoms like fever, just as if you had the original acute infection.
  • 10% — The VA will give you at least this rating level for any lasting effects or symptoms that remain after having epidemic encephalitis (brain inflammation caused by a viral outbreak). Even if your remaining symptoms are mild, you'll receive no less than this minimum rating because of the serious nature of the original brain infection.
