Bulbar palsy (DC 8005)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Bulbar palsy is a serious neurological condition that affects the muscles controlling speech, swallowing, and breathing due to damage in the brainstem (the 'bulb' at the base of your brain). The VA rates this condition at a flat 100% disability rating because of its severe impact on essential functions like eating, drinking, speaking, and breathing. This means you'd receive the full monthly compensation amount and qualify for additional benefits like Dependents' Educational Assistance.

Rating levels

  • 100% — Bulbar palsy is a serious neurological condition that affects the muscles controlled by nerves in your brainstem (the part of your brain that connects to your spinal cord). This condition causes severe problems with essential functions like speaking, swallowing, chewing, and facial movements because the nerves that control these muscles become damaged or diseased. Veterans with bulbar palsy typically experience slurred speech, difficulty swallowing food or liquids safely, drooling, and weakness in facial muscles.
