Bursitis (DC 5019)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Diagnostic Code 5019 for bursitis has been removed from the VA rating schedule and no longer has its own specific rating criteria. Bursitis (inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs that cushion your joints) is now rated under other diagnostic codes depending on which joint is affected and how it limits your movement. The VA will rate your bursitis based on the range of motion loss and functional impairment it causes in the specific joint involved.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Bursitis is inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion joints. The VA rates it based on the limitation of motion of the affected joint under 38 CFR § 4.71a; a minimum 10% rating applies when there is X-ray evidence of involvement and limitation of motion that does not meet a higher specific rating.
