Body system: Hemic and Lymphatic SystemsRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.117

Splenectomy means surgical removal of your spleen, an organ that helps fight infections and filters your blood. The VA rates splenectomy at a flat 20% disability rating - there's only one rating level for this condition. This rating recognizes that losing your spleen puts you at higher risk for serious infections throughout your life, requiring ongoing medical care and precautions.

Rating levels

  • 20% — You qualify for this rating if you have had your spleen surgically removed (splenectomy). The spleen is an organ that helps filter your blood and fight infections, so having it removed puts you at higher risk for certain infections and affects your immune system's ability to protect you from illness.
