Hyperthyroidism, including, but not limited to, Graves' disease (DC 7900)

Body system: Endocrine SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.119DBQ: DBQ ENDO Thyroid & Parathyroid

Hyperthyroidism is when your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, causing symptoms like rapid heartbeat, weight loss, anxiety, and feeling overheated. Graves' disease is the most common type. The VA gives a temporary 30% rating for the first six months after diagnosis while you're getting treatment to stabilize your condition. After those six months, the VA will re-evaluate you under a different rating schedule based on your remaining symptoms.

Rating levels

  • 30% — You automatically qualify for this rating level during the first six months after your doctor initially diagnoses you with hyperthyroidism (when your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone) or Graves' disease. This temporary rating applies regardless of your specific symptoms during this initial period while your condition is being stabilized with treatment.
