Hypoparathyroidism (DC 7905)

Body system: Endocrine SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.119

Hypoparathyroidism happens when your parathyroid glands (small glands in your neck) don't produce enough parathyroid hormone, which controls calcium levels in your blood. The VA gives this condition a unique rating approach - you automatically get 100% disability for the first three months after diagnosis, regardless of your symptoms. After those initial three months, the VA will re-evaluate your condition and rate it based on how it actually affects you, likely using criteria for related endocrine conditions.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You automatically qualify for this rating level during the first three months after doctors first diagnose you with hypoparathyroidism (a condition where your parathyroid glands don't make enough hormone to control calcium levels in your blood). This temporary rating recognizes that you need time to stabilize on treatment and adjust to managing this serious endocrine condition, regardless of your specific symptoms during this initial period.
