Diabetes insipidus (DC 7909)

Body system: Endocrine SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.119DBQ: DBQ ENDO Endocrine (Other than Thyroid, Parathyroid or Diabetes Mellitus)

Diabetes insipidus is a condition where your body can't properly regulate water balance, causing you to urinate excessively and feel constantly thirsty. The VA rates this condition at 30% for the first three months after diagnosis, then drops to 10% if you continue to have excessive urination (polyuria) or need ongoing hormone replacement therapy. This rating system recognizes that the condition requires initial adjustment time and ongoing management.

Rating levels

  • 30% — You automatically qualify for this rating level during the first three months after being diagnosed with diabetes insipidus (a condition where your kidneys can't properly concentrate urine, causing excessive urination and thirst). This temporary rating recognizes that you need time to adjust to treatment and manage the initial impact of the diagnosis on your daily life.
  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if you have ongoing excessive urination (polyuria means urinating much more frequently and in larger amounts than normal) or if you need to take hormone medications continuously to manage your diabetes insipidus. The condition must require either constant urination problems that don't go away or daily hormone replacement therapy to control your symptoms.
