C-cell hyperplasia of the thyroid (DC 7919)

Body system: Endocrine SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.119

C-cell hyperplasia of the thyroid is when certain cells in your thyroid gland grow abnormally. The VA doesn't rate this condition directly under this code - instead, they use different rating codes depending on your treatment. If you need cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation), they'll rate it as thyroid cancer under code 7914. If doctors remove your thyroid as a preventive measure due to genetic testing, they'll rate it as hypothyroidism under code 7903.

Rating levels

  • -1% — C-cell hyperplasia is an overgrowth of the calcitonin-producing cells of the thyroid, often a precursor to medullary thyroid carcinoma. The VA rates it under 38 CFR § 4.119 based on the resulting hormonal effects, and as for malignant thyroid neoplasm (DC 7914) if it progresses to cancer.
