Multiple sclerosis (DC 8018)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124aDBQ: DBQ NEURO Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition where your immune system attacks the protective coating around nerve fibers in your brain and spinal cord. The VA rates MS under diagnostic code 8018 with a minimum rating of 30%, meaning you can't receive less than 30% even if your symptoms are mild. Higher ratings are possible based on how MS affects your daily functioning, with ratings potentially reaching 100% for severe cases that significantly impact your ability to work and live independently.

Rating levels

  • 30% — A diagnosed case of multiple sclerosis with ascertainable residuals receives a minimum 30% rating per § 4.124a.
  • -1% — When MS produces multiple residuals (motor, sensory, visual, cognitive, bowel/bladder), each is rated under its own diagnostic code and combined under § 4.25. Combined totals can reach 100%, but DC 8018 itself only assigns the 30% minimum shown above.
