Meningitis, cerebrospinal, epidemic (DC 8019)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Cerebrospinal meningitis is a serious brain and spinal cord infection that causes inflammation of the protective membranes around your nervous system. The VA rates this condition quite simply: 100% while you have active, fever-causing disease, and a minimum of 10% for any lasting problems (residuals) after the infection clears up. Most veterans will end up with the 10% rating since the active disease phase is usually treated and resolved, but you'd need separate ratings for any ongoing neurological problems.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You qualify for this rating when you have active epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis (a serious brain and spinal cord infection that's actively spreading in the community) that's currently causing fever and making you sick. This applies while the disease is still active and you're experiencing the acute symptoms of the infection, not after you've recovered.
  • 10% — Any lasting effects or symptoms you still have from having epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis (a serious infection of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord) will be rated at least at this level, even if they are mild. This is the minimum rating given for any ongoing problems caused by this condition, regardless of how minor the remaining symptoms might be.
