Brain, abscess of (DC 8020)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

A brain abscess is a collection of pus in the brain tissue, usually caused by infection. The VA rates this condition at 100% while it's active (meaning you're still fighting the infection), and gives a minimum 10% rating for any lasting effects after treatment. This recognizes that brain abscesses are serious conditions that can leave permanent impacts on your neurological function.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You qualify for this rating level when you have an active brain abscess (a pocket of infected pus in your brain tissue) that is currently present and causing symptoms. This means the infection is ongoing and has not been fully resolved through treatment, requiring continued medical care and significantly impacting your daily functioning.
  • 10% — You automatically qualify for at least this rating level if you have any lasting effects or symptoms from a brain abscess (a pocket of infection in the brain tissue). The VA considers brain abscesses serious enough that even minor remaining symptoms like occasional headaches, mild memory issues, or slight coordination problems will earn you this minimum rating.
