Benign, minimum rating (DC 8022)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Diagnostic Code 8022 covers benign (non-cancerous) neurological conditions that don't fit into other specific categories. The VA sets a minimum rating of 60% for any benign neurological condition under this code, recognizing that even non-cancerous neurological issues can significantly impact your daily life. If you have lasting effects or complications from the condition, the VA will rate those residual symptoms separately with a minimum 10% rating.

Rating levels

  • 60% — A diagnosed benign spinal cord tumor receives a minimum 60% rating during the period of active disease.
  • 10% — After active disease ends, residuals are rated under the appropriate diagnostic codes, with a minimum 10% rating.
  • -1% — When residuals of a benign spinal cord tumor cause multiple disabilities, each is rated under its own diagnostic code and combined under § 4.25. The combined total can reach 100%, but DC 8022 itself only assigns the 60% / 10% minimums shown above.
