Narcolepsy (DC 8108)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that causes overwhelming daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks, even when you've had enough sleep at night. The VA doesn't have specific rating criteria for narcolepsy under code 8108, so they rate it using the criteria for petit mal epilepsy instead. This means your rating will be based on how often you experience sleep episodes and how much they interfere with your daily activities, with ratings typically ranging from 10% to 80%.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Narcolepsy is a neurological sleep disorder marked by sudden, uncontrollable episodes of sleep, often with cataplexy (loss of muscle tone), sleep paralysis, or hypnagogic hallucinations. The VA rates narcolepsy by analogy to petit mal epilepsy under 38 CFR § 4.124a, based on the frequency and severity of attacks.
