Paralysis of seventh cranial nerve (DC 8207)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Diagnostic Code 8207 covers paralysis of the radial nerve, which controls movement in your wrist, hand, and fingers - specifically your ability to extend (straighten) your wrist and lift your fingers up. The VA rates this condition from 10% to 30% based on how complete the paralysis is and how much function you've lost. A 30% rating means complete paralysis with no movement, 20% means severe but incomplete loss of function, and 10% means moderate loss where you still have some movement but it's significantly limited.

Rating levels

  • 30% — Complete paralysis means you have total loss of movement and feeling in the affected body part. The muscles cannot move at all, and you have no sensation (ability to feel touch, pain, temperature, or pressure) in that area. This is different from partial paralysis where you might still have some limited movement or feeling remaining.
  • 20% — You have paralysis that is incomplete, meaning you still have some movement or sensation in the affected area, but the paralysis is severe enough to significantly impact your function. The muscle weakness, loss of coordination, or reduced sensation substantially limits your ability to use that part of your body for daily activities, even though it's not completely paralyzed.
  • 10% — You have some paralysis that partially affects your ability to move or control certain muscles, but it's not complete paralysis. The paralysis causes noticeable problems with movement and function, but you still have some muscle control and movement ability in the affected area.
