Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124aDBQ: DBQ NEURO Cranial Nerve Conditions
Diagnostic Code 8210 covers paralysis of the sciatic nerve, which is the large nerve that runs from your lower back down through your hip and leg. The VA rates this condition based on how complete the paralysis is - meaning how much function you've lost in that leg. A 50% rating means complete paralysis (total loss of function), 30% means incomplete but severe paralysis, and 10% means incomplete, moderate paralysis with some function remaining.
Rating levels
- 50% — Complete paralysis means you have total loss of movement and function in the affected body part or area. You cannot move or control the paralyzed muscles at all, and there is no voluntary muscle function remaining. This is full paralysis where the affected limb, body part, or area has no ability to move or respond to your commands.
- 30% — You have paralysis that is incomplete, meaning you still have some movement or feeling in the affected area, but the loss of function is severe. This could mean you have significant weakness, very limited movement, or substantially reduced sensation in the paralyzed body part, but it's not a complete loss of all function.
- 10% — Your paralysis only affects part of your muscle function rather than causing complete loss of movement, and the severity is moderate rather than mild or severe. You have noticeable weakness and reduced control in the affected area, but you still retain some ability to move or use the paralyzed body part, even if it's significantly limited compared to normal function.
