Neuritis of ilio-inguinal nerve (DC 8630)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Neuritis is inflammation of nerves that can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected area. Under diagnostic code 8630, the VA rates neuritis based on how severe the nerve damage is - specifically, they rate it the same way they would rate paralysis of those nerves. You can receive either 0% (for mild to moderate symptoms) or 10% (for severe to complete nerve dysfunction), depending on how much the condition affects your daily activities and function.

Rating levels

  • 10% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuritis of the ilio-inguinal nerve is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve. Without organic changes (muscle atrophy, loss of reflexes, sensory disturbances), the maximum rating is moderate incomplete paralysis. With demonstrable organic changes, severe incomplete paralysis applies; complete paralysis is rated under the 85-series paralysis code for this nerve.
  • 0% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuritis of the ilio-inguinal nerve is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve. Without organic changes (muscle atrophy, loss of reflexes, sensory disturbances), the maximum rating is moderate incomplete paralysis.
