Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a
Neuralgia is severe, shooting nerve pain that follows specific nerve pathways in your body. The VA rates neuralgia by treating it the same as paralysis of the affected nerve, which might seem confusing since you can still move. The ratings range from 20% for mild nerve pain up to 60% for complete loss of function, based on how much the nerve damage affects your ability to move and use the affected body part.
Rating levels
- 40% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the middle radicular group is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis. Tic douloureux of the trigeminal nerve is an exception and may be rated up to complete paralysis per the schedule note.
