Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a
Neuralgia is nerve pain that can feel like sharp, shooting, burning, or electric shock-like sensations along a nerve pathway. The VA rates neuralgia under this code by treating it the same as nerve paralysis, which means they look at how much the nerve pain affects your ability to function. Ratings range from 20% for mild symptoms that slightly impact daily activities up to 80% for complete disability where the pain severely limits your ability to work or perform basic tasks.
Rating levels
- 40% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the all radicular groups is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis. Tic douloureux of the trigeminal nerve is an exception and may be rated up to complete paralysis per the schedule note.
