Neuralgia of external popliteal nerve (DC 8721)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Neuralgia is severe nerve pain, but under this diagnostic code, the VA rates it based on how much paralysis (loss of movement) it causes rather than just the pain level. The ratings range from 10% for mild paralysis effects up to 40% for complete paralysis with foot drop (inability to lift your foot up), loss of toe movement, and complete numbness on the top of your foot. The key thing to understand is that VA is looking at functional loss - what you can't move or feel - not just how much it hurts.

Rating levels

  • 20% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the external popliteal (common peroneal) nerve is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis. Tic douloureux of the trigeminal nerve is an exception and may be rated up to complete paralysis per the schedule note.
