Neuralgia of musculocutaneous nerve (DC 8722)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Neuralgia is nerve pain that can feel like sharp, burning, or shooting sensations along a nerve pathway. Under diagnostic code 8722, the VA rates neuralgia based on how it affects your foot and ankle function, treating it like nerve paralysis rather than just pain. The ratings range from 0% for mild cases to 30% for complete dysfunction where you can't properly turn your foot outward (eversion).

Rating levels

  • 10% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the musculocutaneous (superficial peroneal) nerve is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis.
