Neuralgia of internal popliteal nerve (DC 8724)

Neuralgia under diagnostic code 8724 refers to nerve pain or damage that's severe enough to be rated like paralysis. The VA rates this condition from 10% for mild symptoms up to 40% for complete loss of function, where you can't move your foot or toes normally. The rating depends on how much the nerve damage affects your ability to move and function, not just the pain level.

Rating levels

  • 20% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the internal popliteal (tibial) nerve is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis. Tic douloureux of the trigeminal nerve is an exception and may be rated up to complete paralysis per the schedule note.
  • 10% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the internal popliteal (tibial) nerve is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis.
