Neuralgia of obturator nerve (DC 8728)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Neuralgia is nerve pain that feels like sharp, shooting, or burning sensations along specific nerve pathways. The VA rates neuralgia under diagnostic code 8728 using the same criteria as paralysis conditions, which can seem confusing but makes sense because both involve nerve damage. You'll receive either 0% (for mild to moderate symptoms) or 10% (for severe to complete nerve involvement), though the 10% rating specifically notes it's rated "as paralysis," meaning the nerve pain is severe enough to significantly impact function.

Rating levels

  • 0% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the obturator nerve is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis. Tic douloureux of the trigeminal nerve is an exception and may be rated up to complete paralysis per the schedule note.
