Myelitis (DC 8010)

Body system: Neurological Conditions and Convulsive DisordersRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.124a

Myelitis is inflammation of the spinal cord that can cause pain, weakness, numbness, and problems with bladder or bowel control. The VA gives a minimum 10% rating for myelitis under this code, but most cases will actually be rated under other neurological codes that better capture your specific symptoms and limitations. The 10% rating here is just a starting point - your actual rating will likely be higher based on how the condition affects your daily life and ability to work.

Rating levels

  • 10% — A diagnosed case of myelitis with ascertainable residuals receives a minimum 10% rating per § 4.124a.
  • -1% — When myelitis causes multiple residuals (motor, sensory, bowel/bladder), each is rated under its own diagnostic code and combined under § 4.25. Combined totals can reach 100%, but DC 8010 itself only assigns the 10% minimum shown above.
