Tabes dorsalis is a late-stage complication of untreated syphilis that damages the spinal cord and nerves, causing problems with walking, balance, pain, and sometimes vision or mental function. The VA doesn't have specific rating percentages for this condition - instead, they rate it based on your individual symptoms like seizures, paralysis, vision problems, or mental health issues. Your rating percentage will depend on how severely these symptoms affect your daily life and ability to work.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Tabes dorsalis is a late-stage neurosyphilis that damages the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and the dorsal nerve roots, causing unsteady gait, sensory loss in the legs, sharp shooting pains, and bladder problems. The VA rates the neurological residuals — gait disturbance, sensory ataxia, peripheral-nerve symptoms — under 38 CFR § 4.124a.
