Neuralgia is nerve pain that can be sharp, burning, or shooting, often caused by nerve damage or irritation. The VA rates neuralgia under this code by treating it as if it were paralysis, which might seem odd but reflects how severe nerve pain can disable your function. Ratings range from 20% for mild symptoms up to 60% for complete loss of hand function, with the percentage based on how much the nerve pain limits your ability to use your affected body part.
Rating levels
- 40% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the lower radicular group is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis. Tic douloureux of the trigeminal nerve is an exception and may be rated up to complete paralysis per the schedule note.
- 30% — Under 38 CFR §4.124a, neuralgia of the lower radicular group is rated by reference to the paralysis tiers for the same nerve, up to a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis.
