Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurological condition that breaks down nerve cells controlling voluntary muscle movement. The VA recognizes how devastating this disease is and automatically rates ALS at 100% disability as soon as it's diagnosed. This means you'll receive the full monthly compensation amount plus access to all VA benefits, regardless of how early or advanced your condition is when diagnosed.

Rating levels

  • 100% — If you are diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), you automatically qualify for this rating level regardless of how advanced your symptoms are. ALS is a progressive neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells controlling voluntary muscle movement, leading to muscle weakness, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing, and eventually paralysis.
